The nurse performs following assessments as part of the primary survey for respiratory distress:
- Assess for bleeding, vomiting, or facial edema.
- Observe and count respiratory rate.
- Assess skin color, temperature, and moisture.
- Inspect extremities for any obvious deformities.
- Assess full body for additional or related injuries.
- The tiny, elastic air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs experience fluid buildup, which results in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
- Less oxygen enters your circulation because of the fluid's ability to prevent your lungs from filling with enough air.
- Your organs are deprived of the oxygen they require to function as a result.
- If the lung is injured, such as by being punctured by a rib during CPR or a vehicle accident, it can instantly impair breathing.
- Internal bleeding into the lung tissue may happen even if breathing is unaffected. Within a few days, this situation can quickly progress into ARDS.
