The phenomenon in which the level of gene expression is controlled so that genes can be expressed at high or low levels is known as gene regulation.
Gene regulation is a process which is carried by a number of different mechanisms which help in determining and regulating the timing, location as well as the amount in which the genes are expressed. The different mechanisms might include the chemical modification of DNA, regulatory proteins etc.
There are three main types of gene regulation namely, positive regulation which increases the gene expression, second is negative regulation which decreases the gene expression and co-regulation in which multiple genes are turned on and off together.
