Schaff was born in Chur, Switzerland, and educated at the gymnasium of Stuttgart. At the universities of Tübingen, Halle, and Berlin, he was successively influenced by Ferdinand Christian Baur and Schmid, by Friedrich August Tholuck and Julius Müller, David Strauss, and, above all.
Schaff visited Europe, representing the yank German churches at the ecclesiastical diet at Frankfurt am principal and at the Swiss pastoral conference at Basel. He lectured in Germany on us and acquired the diploma of physician of Divinity from Berlin.
Schaff's huge perspectives strongly motivated the German Reformed Church, thru his teaching at Mercersburg, his championship of English in German Reformed church buildings and schools in America, his hymnal (1859), via his labors as chairman of the committee which organized a new liturgy, and via his edition (1863) of the Heidelberg Catechism.
