The American Woman Suffrage Association and National Woman Suffrage Association were created after the  split of the American Equal Rights Association (AERA).

The  American Equal Rights Association (AERA) was set up in 1886 in the US to demand equal rights for all citizens, irrespective of race, color, or sex. Universal adult suffrage was a core demand.

In 1869, it split into two groups over disagreements on the question of suffrage for African-American men.

It led to the creation of the more radical National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) led by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and the more conservative American Woman Suffrage Association led by Lucy Stone and others.

But the two reunited in 1890, leading to the birth of the National American Woman Suffrage Association.
