In a bone marrow aspiration, a health care provider uses a thin needle to remove a small amount of liquid bone marrow, usually from a spot in the back of your hipbone.
The health care provider proceeds with cleaning the skin and injecting numbing medicine into the area and surface of the bone. A biopsy needle is inserted into the bone. The center of the needle is removed and the hollowed needle is moved deeper into the bone. This captures a tiny sample, or core, of bone marrow within the needle.
Most bone marrow aspirates are obtained from the posterior iliac crest in an adult. The anterior iliac crest can also be used and occasionally the ribs or vertebrae.
