The Communist Party and the Kuomitang even maintained an alliance based on common anti-colonialist interests, but in 1927 General Chiang Kai-Shec, taking over the National Party troops, decided to submit all the local chiefs of the country. Advancing over the north the Kuomitang approached major Chinese cities such as Guangzhou and Shanghai, prompting the uprising of the communist workers who wanted to arrive before the Kuomitang and take power in those cities. The Kuomitang were forced to choose between supporting the newly established communes or rejecting them. They were left with the second option marking the rupture between the two parties and the complete lateralization of the nationalist party.
