An amusement park sells children and adult tickets at a ratio of 8 to 1. On Saturday they sold 147 more child tickets then adult tickets. How many tickets did the amusement park sell on Saturday?

let the number of adult tickets be x and the number of children tickets be y

x:y = 8:1

On Saturday, x = 147 + y

(147+y):y  = 8:1

[tex] \frac{147 + y}{y} = \frac{8}{1} [/tex]

[tex] \frac{147}{y} + [tex] \frac{y}{y} = 8 + 1

[tex] \frac{147}{y} = 8

147 = 8y

∴y = 88

x = 147 + 88

∴ x = 235

 so the no of tickets sold on saturday = 235 + 88 = 323
