Cells use passive and active transport to move materials across the cell membrane for the maintenance of a constant internal environment. The process is called homeostasis. Reason why? Well, it's critical for living things to keep up an adjusted interior environment to survive. Homeostasis is not only one but rather an aggregate term to all procedures expected to keep that adjust.
