I'm pretty sure you multiply the amount of characters they use, which is 9, by the number of students in the school.

For example, if there were 589 students, you'd multiply 589*9 which is 5301. So for a school with 589 students there'd be 5301 codes they could use before they'd either reuse codes or get a new set of characters.
