Surface are just means that you need to find the area of every face, then add. 

TO find the Area of the rectangle do 16*8 = 128

For the triangle the area formula is b*h*1/2 So do 7*8*1/2= 28   

There are four sides total and two triangles and two rectangles so 28+28+128+128= 312

SO the surface area is 312 in cubed
To find the Surface Area of a Triangular based prism you need to use the following formula:  SA= bXh÷2 X H (of the prism)

In the question you have shown, the height is 8in, the base is 7in, and the height of the prism is 16in

so SA= 7X8÷2X16
= 448in^2
