Buddhism developed in reaction to the established religion in India which at the time was Hinduism. Both continued as Hinduism under that single founder.
Hindus believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. Some of Hinduism's main beliefs are about the unity of existence and religious harmony. Which is why it became so popular.
