At first, the Europeans went exploring in order to find a direct sea route to Asia. When they discovered the Americas and its raw materials, their primary purpose became to acquire as much resources as they could.

To that end, the British settled on the East Coast and established colonies while the French settled in Quebec.

Apart from acquiring raw materials, there were other reasons for exploring but the main goal for Europeans was to make their nations richer and more powerful.
