The lateral continuity principle states that sediment layers first run laterally in all directions. That is, they are laterally continuous. As a result, it can be assumed that rocks that are otherwise similar but are now separated by valleys and other erosion features were originally contiguous.
Sedimentary layers do not extend infinitely. Rather, boundaries are identifiable and controlled by the amount and type of sediment available and the size and shape of sedimentary basins. However, as the amount of material decreases away from the source, the layer of material becomes thinner.
