An impact crater's ejecta blanket is a typically symmetrical apron of ejecta that is heavily layered near the rim and thin to discontinuous at the blanket's outer border. Earth, Mars, and Mercury are examples of terrestrial planets and satellites that have ejecta blankets (e.g., Moon).
However, the creation process does not end with excavation as meteorite craters get larger. The parabolic hole for such craters appears to be too enormous to maintain itself, and it collapses as a result, producing a variety of morphologies. The ultimate depression is referred to as a complex crater, and the collapse process is known as the modification stage.
