Incident is the term for something that happened during the operation of an aircraft which did or could affect the safety of operation but which did not rise to the severity of an accident.
Included in this are a crew member being injured or ill and being unable to execute a regular flying duty, an in-flight fire, or a flight control issue.
There are various definitions used by the FAA, NTSB, and ICAO.
What is considered an aircraft incident?
- An incident is any event, other than an accident, connected to flying an aircraft that compromises or jeopardizes the safety of operations.
- Operator refers to any individual who causes or approves the operation of an aircraft, such as the aircraft's owner, lessee, or bailee.
- Federal regulations compel operators in the aviation industry to quickly report certain events and aircraft accidents to the NTSB.
- When airline employees are working on, or around, an aircraft on the ground, whether on the ramp or at a maintenance facility, ground damage events (incidents in which airline staff cause damage to an aircraft on the ground) happen
