Previous research has revealed that dogs encourage human social interaction. Additionally, the form of social connection is restricted to banal discussions or nonverbal cues like smiling or staring.
In order to determine whether dogs can encourage closer connections, our tests were conducted in outdoor environments.
In the first experiment, a male confederate asked passersby for cash while being accompanied or unaccompanied by a dog. With the exception of using a female confederate, the second experiment was identical. A third experiment had a male confederate (with or without a dog) dropping some coins on the floor inadvertently to see if anyone would assist him in picking them up. In the fourth experiment, a male accomplice (with or without a dog) asked young girls for their phone numbers on the street.
The findings indicate that having a dog was connected with higher rates of assisting behavior (experiments 1, 2, and 3) and higher compliance with the confederate's requests (experiment 4). It is addressed how a domestic dog might work as a catalyst for the development of relationships and affinity in social interaction.
