Ferno de Magalhaes, also known by his English name "Magellan," was one of the most famous explorers of Portuguese descent. From 1519 to 1522, he organised and led the first circuit of the globe. By travelling over the Atlantic Ocean, he intended to arrive at South-East Asia, where gems and spices were grown. In order to sail from the Atlantic to the ocean beyond the Americas, he hoped to locate a passage across South America. Magellan launched five ships from Spain. Only one ship, the Victoria (seen on a map from 1590), returned to Spain three years later after having been around the globe. Ferdinand Magellan started his famous expedition to cross the globe 500 years ago.
