The Maharajahs of Srivijaya controlled the Malay polity and Hindu-Buddhist trading empire known as Srivijaya, whose name means shining victory. The empire was centered on trade, and local rulers swore fealty to the ruling lord in exchange for financial gain.
From the seventh to the twelfth centuries, the Srivijaya Empire ruled over modern-day Indonesia and most of the Malay Archipelago. The empire engaged in considerable trade with China and India while assimilating Chinese and Buddhist political methods into their cultural practices. A significant religious hub in the area was Srivijaya. It followed Mahayana Buddhism and quickly developed into a resting place for Chinese Buddhist pilgrims traveling to India. The monarchs of Srivijaya even built monasteries in southeast India's Negapattam (now Nagappattinam). Their entire empire depended on trade, and when the river they used to conduct trade was taken by adversaries, the empire could no longer support itself.
