In reaction to multiple scandals, the Belmont Report (Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research, 1978) had a significant impact on human subjects-based research. It appears that the idea of autonomy entered the discussion out of nowhere and quickly took over as the primary motivator of ethical conduct in human subjects-based research. Indeed, the history of research involving human beings has made it abundantly evident that upholding the scientific community's moral principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence alone was insufficient.
