Taste pores are openings in the epithelium for chemical substances to enter. Peripheral sensory innervation is through branches of three cranial nerves: facial (VII), glossopharyngeal (IX), and vagal (IV) (X). Only three of the four morphologically unique forms of lingual papillae—the fungiform, foliate, and circumvallate papillae—bear taste receptors.
