Under the Song Dynasty, there was a need for more food self-sufficiency and as a result, the government had to look for ways to help China become better at food production. One such way they did this was by introducing a new variety of rice.
This new variety of rice was an early-ripening rice which meant that the cultivation period was lower. It was also able to grow in the poor soils of several regions of China.
It was as a result of the Champa kingdom that the Song learnt of this variety of rice and they introduced it to the Yangzi and Huai river regions where it was then farmed in large quantities.
