Why did the Portugese start sugar plantations in Madeira?
- The Portugese in 1942 , started their sugar plantations in an uninhabited island near the east coast of Africa. The island was called as Madeira.
- The indegenous people of Canary island, the w Guanches were brought into the plantations and they were the first workers in Madeira.
- They worked in the sugar mills as well in the plantations. Due to tough labour, many Guanches fell ill and died and they were replaced by African slaves. Maderia had about 80 sugar mills by the end of 1500s. By mid sixteenth century, sugar plantations were introduced in Brazil by the Portugese.
