After Georgia's Trustee Period, when authority was returned to the British king, the slave population in the colony rapidly increased in the years that followed.
For the first 20 years of Georgia's history, a board of trustees governed the colony, hence the named Trustee Georgia. King George of England signed a charter establishing the colony and establishing its governing body on 21 April 1732.
In 1752, Georgia ceased to be a property colony (ruled by a trustee) and became a royal colony (ruled by a king). Trustees were frustrated by the lack of financial and social success. They chose to return the colony to the king a year before his charter of 1732 expired.
The colonies were administered by a sovereign king, who appointed a governor in each colony and a council to assist him in the British colonies. The king was also responsible for appointing colonial magistrates, usually for life, although they could be removed at will until 1760.
