SPEC CPU benchmarks find deficiencies in Whetstone, Linpack and Dhrystone as they are synthetic benchmarks, which means that they are both short programmes that have been statistically engineered to replicate the usage of a common set of programmes. These benchmarks have peculiar code that isn't generally found in contemporary real-world programmes.

The Technical Support Unit of the Department of Trade and Industry in the United Kingdom created the Whetstone benchmark, a synthetic benchmark for assessing the performance of computers, in 1972. Reinhold P. Weicker created the Dhrystone benchmark software in 1984 as a synthetic computing example of system (integer) programming. The Dhrystone developed into a benchmark for CPU performance in general.
