In "Mother Tongue," Amy Tan uses her mother as an example to show the importance of communication. That's because it shows that her mother is a Chinese immigrant, who speaks "broken English."

Although her mother's pronunciation is not the best, he understands English very well and people may understand her, but her mother cannot communicate as people ignore the way she speaks.

The lack of communication hurt her mother in many ways in the US and it greatly impacted the way she viewed the American language and society.
