Syphilis is an STD or a sexually transmitted disease. It can be cured within some months of diagnosis. It was studied in the US in 1932 to record the natural history associated with it. The study is often known as the USPHS syphilis study at Tuskegee.
The study involved 600 black men among whom 399 were affected with syphilis. These people were offered free treatment, free meals, and burial insurance in return for their participation in the study. The purpose of the study was to research the evolution of the disease and find a treatment. However, people who were affected were not informed. They were also not given any treatment when the cure was found, in 1960, in the form of penicillin.
Thus, we may say that doctors withhold treatment from syphilis sufferers. The consequences led to an increased spread of the disease to a healthy population and caused many deaths of the participants.
