In 1543 the Catholic Church convened the Council of Trent with the aim of reforming the foundations of the Church in order to better compete against the growth of the Protestant Churches. The Council reaffirmed the classical foundations of Catholicism, such as the actual presence in the Eucharist, for example, and made strong opposition to the reform movement.
