The Reign of Terror was a period of violence during the French Revolution that lasted from 1793 until about the fall of Robespierre in mid-1794. The Jacobins, or radicals, seized command of the revolutionary government. The Jacobins believed it was their duty to protect the revolution, even when that meant resorting to violence and terror. Several thousand individuals who were suspected of being defiant to the Revolution were captured and executed during this time. It permitted people to be jailed without being tried. Executions were overseen by Jacobins. The Law of 22 Prairial also needed Revolutionary Tribunals either to acquit or sentence suspects to death.
