A prominent member of a vast family of north German musicians, Johann Sebastian Bach was the most well-known composer of the Baroque era. He was born in Eisenach, Thuringia, Ernestine Saxon Duchies [Germany] on March 21 (March 31, New Style), 1685, and died in Leipzig on July 28, 1750. Bach is now widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time and is celebrated for the creation of the Brandenburg Concertos, The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Mass in B Minor, and numerous other masterpieces of church and instrumental music. Although he was admired by his contemporaries primarily as an outstanding harpsichordist, organist, and expert on organ building, Bach was primarily admired by his contemporaries as an outstanding harpsichordist showing up at a favorable time in music history.
