Erik Erikson, an ego psychologist, developed a fundamental and significant theory of development. Despite the impact of psychotherapist Sigmund Freud's work, Erikson's theory placed more emphasis on psychosocial than psychosexual development. Erikson shared Sigmund Freud's belief that personality changes throughout time. In contrast to Freud's idea of psychosexual stages, Erikson's theory focused on the consequences of social experience over the lifespan. Erikson was interested in the function that social ties and interaction had in the maturation and growth of people. Erikson's theories were built on the idea of epigenetics. This idea holds that humans evolve in a succession of stages that happen over time and within the confines of a larger group.
According to Erikson's theory, each stage builds on the ones that came before it and prepares the way for the phases of growth that follow. Erikson thought that at each stage, humans go through a conflict that marks a turning point in their growth. According to Erikson, these conflicts are primarily brought on by achieving or failing to achieve a particular psychological feature. Both the possibility for failure and the possibilities for personal progress are great at this moment. People leave the stage with psychological strengths that will benefit them for the rest of their lives if they are able to resolve the issue. If they can't resolve these conflicts, kids might not develop the crucial skills needed for a strong sense of self.
