What was the Compromise of 1850?
A collection of rules that tried to accommodate both parties and were approved during ferocious debate between factions supporting and against slavery. The agreement permitted the newly acquired territories to chose whether or not to practice slavery, while still allowing California to join the union as a "free" (non-slavery) state. The Fugitive Slave Act, which turned out to be quite unpopular in the North, was part of the Compromise. One of the driving forces behind the compromise's passage was Senator Henry Clay.
Under this act the state of California was acknowledged as a free state.
