What is a hurricane?

a tropical cyclone with winds of 74 miles (119 kilometres) per hour or more that occasionally moves into temperate latitudes while typically accompanied by rain, thunder, and lightning is known as a hurricane.

At 6:10 a.m. on August 29, Hurricane Katrina's centre made landfall in southeast Louisiana after passing through South Florida and intensifying over the Gulf of Mexico. At the time, Katrina was a powerful Category 3 hurricane with winds of 125 mph and a central pressure of 920 millibars (see Appendix A for the Saffir-Simpson Scale) (MB). Based on core pressure, Katrina is now the third-most intense U.S. hurricane ever to land. Around 9:45 a.m., Katrina's centre struck onshore close to the Louisiana–Mississippi line and kept moving north across Mississippi while sustaining hurricane intensity almost 100 miles inland. Katrina continued north during the following two days, over the lower Mississippi Valley, and into the Ohio River.
