Reticular activating system is the brain system which would allow previously filtered stimuli to enter our consciousness.

What is reticular activating system?

The reticular activating system (RAS) is a network of neurons in the brain stem that mediates behavior and activates awake, desynchronized cortical EEG patterns. It also projects posteriorly to the thalamus and directly to the cortex. It serves as a filter to remove extraneous noise that can hinder or delay message processing while you're sleeping. Damage to the RAS results in unconsciousness, which prevents one from being awake or cognizant. The medial group of nuclei and the small group of nuclei are two lateral groups of nuclei that run the length of the brainstem. Midline raphe nuclei also exist there.
