The strain theory is a concept used in sociology and criminology to explain how social institutions within a society might affect its members to commit crimes.
Robert K. Merton created the strain theory, a sociology and criminology theory, in 1938. According to the idea, people are under pressure from society to fulfill socially acceptable goals (like the American dream) despite not having the resources to do so. This causes stress, which might push people to conduct crimes like drug sales or prostitution in order to secure their financial future. Possible strains include Structural or Individual.
