Give a brief account on social control.
Within the social science fields, the notion of social control is used. Social control is defined as a system of rules and norms in a society that keep people obedient to established norms and the use of formalized methods. The control model evolved from the disciplinary model.
Sociologists distinguish between two primary types of social control :
Informal :
Internalization of norms and values through socialization, which is defined as "the process by which an individual, born with behavioural potentialities of enormously wide range, is led to develop actual behaviour that is confined to the narrower range of what is acceptable for him by the group standards."
Formal methods of social control:
Government-enforced external punishments used to thwart the emergence of Anarchy or turmoil in society. This type of control is referred described as regulation by some theorists, including Émile Durkheim.
The methods used to enforce social control might be informal or formal, as was briefly stated above. Sociologist Edward A. Ross contends that regardless of the nature of the beliefs, they have a bigger impact on human conduct than rules imposed by the government.
Social control is seen as one of the pillars of social order.
