The region of the diencephalon that forms the floor of the third ventricle and extends anteriorly to the optic chiasm is the hypothalamus.

Like the thalamus, a skinny vertical area packed with CSF known as the third ventricle is located midline among the 2 halves of the hypothalamus thalamus. The hypothalamus extends anteriorly to the optic chiasm and posteriorly to encompass the mammillary our bodies at the ventral floor of the brain.
