Dvoák is actually credited with inventing some of music's earliest "American" sounds.Dvoák was asked to cross the Atlantic to New York in 1892 to become the director of the National Conservatory of Music. He was a composer who used folk and regional styles to create nationalist idioms in his music. He realized upon his arrival that, in addition to his duties as director, he was expected to develop an "American" idiom in the same way that he had developed the Bohemian sounds in his home country.

Dvoák encouraged the young American composers at the National Conservatory to seek their vision through the music enjoyed by the people groups that surrounded them after becoming immersed in the folk songs of this new land:Native Americans as well as African Americans.
