The clustering of men and women into different jobs and sectors is called horizontal job segregation.

  • Horizontal segregation is the under- or over-representation of women and men in a particular occupation or sector.
  • The imbalance between women and men in managerial positions (history) . Men dominate managerial positions, women concentrate on non-managerial positions, and women and men work at different levels and men.

At higher levels of dominance, women concentrate on low-skilled, low-paying jobs. and horizontal separation. Occupational segregation occurs when demographic groups are overrepresented or underrepresented in certain occupational categories.
