Despite the fact that each of these colonies had to develop their economies, the foundation of the colonies in New England, Maryland, and Pennsylvania was mostly inspired by concerns over the exercise of religion. The other colonies were established in order to advance commerce and the economy. New Netherland, a former Dutch province, served as the foundation for the Middle Colonies. The British Empire held the Thirteen Colonies as well as lands in Canada, Florida, and the Caribbean as part of its conquests in the New World.
