Lt. Col. George Washington led a group of Virginia soldiers out of an encampment in the Ohio Valley on the evening of May 27, 1754.
Washington was raised in early Virginia as the son of a prosperous plantation owner. When he was younger, he worked as a surveyor. Later, he participated in the French and Indian War (1754-63).
Fort Narrows
Washington was worried that "great forces" may strike after the battle with Jumonville's troops. He decided to bolster his defenses at the Great Meadows. He erected a palisaded fort with a circular shape throughout the final two days of May and the first three days of June. He named it Fort Necessity.
