As a sort of sequel to the Monroe Doctrine, President Theodore Roosevelt declared in 1904 that the United States may use military force to protect its citizens.
The Monroe doctrine was improved by the Roosevelt Corollary. In it, Roosevelt declared that the U.S. had a duty to guard countries in the Americas against recolonization by European powers and that the country would use force if it deemed it was necessary to do so.
The corollary asserted that not only were the countries of the Western Hemisphere closed to colonization by European powers, but that the United States had a duty to maintain law and maintain law and order while protecting lives and property there.
