What is plate tectonic theory?
Alfred Wegener was the first who gave the theory of plate tectonics. According to this theory, the lithosphere, which is typically 100 km thick and sits on top of the asthenosphere, is said to be Earth's outermost, unyielding layer. The lithosphere is divided into several small plates, six or seven medium-sized regional plates, and seven extremely massive continental and oceanic plates. These plates interact at their boundaries as they converge, diverge, or slip past one another as they move relative to one another by 2 to 4 inches every year. Although earthquakes and volcanoes can occur in plate interiors, these interactions are regarded to be the main cause of the majority of Earth's seismic and volcanic activity.
So, the active volcanoes, major mountain belts, and earthquake epicenters are the products of plate tectonics, as when plates converge it forms mountain, if plates diverge it forms oceans, and so on.
