After failing to find a path from Canada going to Asia, Jacques Cartier founded Quebec.

Not until Lawrence and the modern-day Prince Edward Island was the Northwest Passage discovered. On his second journey, Cartier made his way to Quebec, which is where he is credited with founding, by traveling up the Lawrence River.

Cartier owned the vessels La Grande Hermine, La Petite Hermine, and L'Emerillon. Funk Island, off the coast of Newfoundland, was reached by the expedition. On September 7, 1535, Cartier and his soldiers arrived at the site of the present-day city of Quebec.

The expedition's objectives included locating a northwest route to Asia as well as collecting riches like gold and spices along the way. Jacques Cartier is credited with discovering the St. Lawrence region and giving Canada its name.
