When the pulse rates of neonates and adults are compared, the neonate's pulse is twice as rapid as the adult's.

The resting heart rates of newborns are significantly higher than those of adults, ranging from 100 to 150 beats per minute. In fact, a newborn's resting heart rate is comparable to an adult working out hard while burning food in every cell of their bodies to support that growth. In addition to a lot of milk and oxygen, the process also generates a lot of carbon dioxide as waste. The hearts of newborns work nonstop to keep eliminating carbon dioxide and giving oxygen to support their incredible growth. Cardiac output is made up of the components of heart rate and stroke volume. Neonatals do not have the same capacity as adults to enhance cardiac output by increasing stroke volume. Instead, neonates have smaller preload reserve because their cardiac output is greatly influenced by heart rate. The neonatal heart must work at close to maximum capacity because the newborn's oxygen needs are substantially higher than those of an adult.
