In almost every culture, the evolution of religious thinking has been directly correlated with literary interpretation and culture. The distinction between literary theory and religion is rarely made, particularly in modern postmodern critical theory. The interdisciplinary study of religion and literature, which was pioneered in the twentieth century by Christian critics, developed into a recognized academic field in the United States and has since flourished.
Contrarily, literary theory has examined religious writings as reflections of the cultural presuppositions and ideals that gave rise to them. Thus, literary theory has highlighted some of the ways that religions have reflected and encouraged the treatment of minorities and women, for instance, as distinct from or inferior to more dominating groups.
