A friend of the deceased who is knowledgeable about the circumstances is likely to think that the speaker's remarks fall short of his understanding and his wishes; a friend who is less knowledgeable may be envious and think the speaker is exaggerating when he hears of something that is beyond his own capabilities. As long as each listener believes he can perform at least as well as them, mankind can tolerate others' praise; nevertheless, when the speaker outperforms him, jealousy is stirred and he begins to be skeptical.
