What is Methane gas?

  • Methane is non-toxic and poses no danger when inhaled in limited amounts.
  • However, when large amounts of natural gas or methane  displace the air, it can run out of oxygen and suffocate.
  • It is mainly used  as a fuel to generate heat and light.
  • It can also be used in the formation of organic chemicals.
  • Methane can form from the decay of natural substances and is commonly found in landfills, wetlands, septic tanks and sewers.
  • The largest sources of anthropogenic methane emissions  in the United States are oil and gas systems, livestock enteric fermentation, and landfills.
  • Methane has more than 80 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide for the first 20 years after entering the atmosphere.
  • Methane sets the pace of warming in the short term, even if the impact of CO2 lasts longer.
  • At least 25% of  global warming today is caused by methane from human activity.
