In the court case Hernandez vs Texas, the supreme court ruled that the fourteenth amendment had been violated.

The fourteenth amendment prohibits states from passing or enforcing laws that limit the rights or privileges of US citizens, from taking someone's life, liberty, or property without due process of law, and from depriving anybody living inside their borders of the equal protection of the laws.

In Hernandez v. Texas, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Fourteenth Amendment applied to all racial and ethnic groups that faced discrimination. As a result, Hispanics and all other non-white people are now covered by civil rights laws.
