In the first few years, the brain grows incredibly fast; this brain development is known as Transient Exuberance.
The majority of the 100 to 200 billion neurons in the brain are present at birth, but they are not yet completely developed. Throughout childhood, each brain pathway creates millions of new connections. Dendrites, or the connections between neurons, will experience a brief exuberance or brief explosive development during the next years (exuberant because it is so rapid and transient because some of it is temporary).
These dendrites proliferate over the first two years, and by the age of 2, a single neuron may contain thousands of dendrites. After this sharp growth, the neural pathways that are not used will be removed through a process called pruning, making the utilized neural pathways considerably stronger.
Pruning is believed to improve brain performance, enabling the mastering of increasingly difficult abilities. In the early years of life, there is transient exuberance, and pruning continues throughout infancy and into adolescence in various parts of the brain. The cortex, the brain's thin outer layer engaged in voluntary action and thought, is where this activity is predominantly taking place.
