At the beginning of the tragedy of Macbeth, act iii, Banquo says that he thinks that Macbeth is Duncan's murderer.
Banquo suspects Macbeth but remembers the witches' predictions that his own children will be kings, and gets reassured. He tells the Macbeths that he intends to go riding with Fleance. The Macbeths convince Banquo to return later that evening to their new palace for a feast.
Macbeth comes to the realization that the Witches' prophecy about Banquo's children being kings, poses a threat to his own position. He could not take the thought of Banquo's descendants taking his position. Macbeth summons two hired murderers and counter-checks with them their earlier arrangements for the killing of Banquo.
